Holy Week and Easter is one of the most dramatic period in the Church’s calendar. You can find all the detail here of the full range of services available throughout the Benefice.
Palm Sunday, 14th April
Said Communion – St Mary’s – 8.00 am
Sung Eucharist – St Mary’s – 9.30 am
The focus for this service is the events of that first “Palm Sunday,” Jesus’ triumphal entry into Jerusalem, greeted by crowds of people to welcome him. At the very end of the service there’s a dramatic shift as we look briefly at what is to come.
Family Service – Walford – 9.30 am
An informal Palm Sunday Service.
Devotion for Holy Week (Come & Sing the Faure Requiem) – St Mary’s – 6.30 pm
At the beginning of Holy Week we reflect on the events of the week to come in this devotional service. At the heart of the service is Gabriel Faure’s Requiem. This is a Come & Sing event. All are welcome to come along to join the choir at 4.00 for the rehearsal. Tea (provided) will follow and then the service at 6.30. You can sign up to sing here. Monday in Holy Week, 15th April
Departure of the Cross – Brampton Abbotts – 5.30 pm

Wednesday in Holy Week, 17th April
Compline – St Mary’s – 7.00 pm
The short, ancient and beautiful monastic night time service of Compline – the perfect night cap.
Maundy Thursday, 18th April
Holy Communion – St Mary’s – 10.00 am
Sung Eucharist – St Mary’s – 7.30 pm
A bitter / sweet service that takes the events of The Last Supper (the very first Eucharist) as its central theme. At the end of the service the mood darkens as altars are stripped and the church made bare, accompanied by beautiful music. The service ends in darkness and we depart (without ceremony, remembering the falling away of the disciples) in silence. A beautiful service.
Good Friday, 19th April
Toast and Toddle – St Mary’s – 10.00 – 12.00 am
New for this year. This will be a Good Friday “special” of the usual Wednesday morning term-time event with coffee and snacks and social time for parents, toddlers and (on this occasion) primary school aged children. Feel free to come and go as and when you wish.
Commemoration of Our Lord’s Passion – St Mary’s – 1.00 – 3.00 pm
The first part of this service is said, with plenty of space for reflection and focusses on readings covering the events of Good Friday. From 2.00 pm we introduce more ingredients in the form of imagery, movement and music for a rich commemoration of the final hour of Christ’s life on earth. Please come along for the full two hours or just the first or second half.
Commemoration of Our Lord’s Passion – Walford – 2.00 – 3.00 pm
Holy Saturday, 20th April
Easter Vigil – St Mary’s – 8.00 pm
A quiet service on this rest day, keeping watch, waiting. Then the Paschal candle is lit from fresh fire, and Easter begins in this service.
Easter Day, 21st April
Said Communion – St Mary’s – 8.00 am
All Age Eucharist for Easter Day – St Mary’s – 9.30 am
